Welding Master | Pan Jiluan: China's Strongest Welder

Pan Jiluan was born on December 24, 1927, into a scholarly family in Ruichang, Jiangxi Province. During that turbulent era, perhaps witnessing the nation's numerous tragedies from a young age, and influenced by his father's philosophy of "saving the nation through industry," Pan Jiluan later chose welding as his major while at Southwest Associated University. In 1993, Pan Jiluan was invited by the Jiangxi Provincial Government to serve as President of the newly established Nanchang University. He led Nanchang University through numerous challenges, ending Jiangxi Province's history of having no national key disciplines or doctoral programs. In August 1944, Pan Jiluan was admitted to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Southwest Associated University and later transferred to Tsinghua University for further study. In August 1948, he became an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Tsinghua University and joined the Communist Party of China in October of the same year. In August 1953, he graduated with a master's degree from Harbin Institute of Technology. In August 1955, he led a dozen students to formally establish a welding teaching and research group at Tsinghua University.

As an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a welding engineering expert, Pan Jiluan is a undisputed leader in China's welding profession. He single-handedly established the nation's first welding program, overcame numerous scientific challenges, and solved numerous major national engineering problems. Pan Jiluan once said that welding technology is essential for rockets, missiles, warships, aircraft carriers, and high-speed rail. He later participated in the design and construction of several nuclear power plants in China. Throughout his life, he focused on researching welding processes, welding automation, welding power sources, and weldability. He is one of the founders of China's welding discipline and the first recipient of the "China Welding Lifetime Achievement Award," making groundbreaking contributions to China's welding industry. Pan Jiluan has long been engaged in welding science and technology research, achieving numerous important innovative results. Throughout history, he has created numerous "firsts" for China's scientific and technological progress, promoted the application of advanced welding technology and equipment in major national projects, and led and driven the development of international welding engineering science. He has participated in solving many major engineering problems in my country, ensuring seamless high-speed rail tracks and airtight nuclear power plants.

"The birth of each generation of robots is a difficult process. There was a period of time when we were struggling because we didn't know how to solve the problem of the robot's load-bearing capacity. The research team conducted extensive experiments and overcame countless difficulties," said Zhang Hua, a member of the research team at the time, looking back on this research. After 10 years of research, Pan Jiluan's team finally developed a trackless, all-position crawling welding robot and applied for a patent. The technological integration and innovation of this achievement are already at the international forefront. By 2010, Pan Jiluan had been granted over 10 national patents and 2 U.S. patents. In 2003, he successfully developed a crawling arc welding robot, which is at the international forefront. In 2008, he completed the "Analysis of High-Speed Railway Rail Welding Quality" and the "Narrow Gap Automatic Arc Welding System for High-Speed Railway Rails." Pan Jiluan's research achievements are countless, making indelible contributions to the Chinese welding field.

Talking about his scientific research achievements, Pan Jiliang once said: "Letting my scientific research work solve practical problems is my lifelong goal. I feel at ease and happy that my work contributes to the country. If the country needs me, I must go. After all, there are always more solutions than difficulties." For more than 60 years, Pan Jiliang has closely linked his career with the needs of the country.
